A woman has been left heartbroken after a £63 DNA kit exposed her dad as a cheater - causing her to see him in a different light. She explained how she bought a DNA kit for fun after her boyfriend started researching into his own family history and genealogy.
While he has a "huge family", she only has her parents and two living grandparents in her life - no biological aunties, uncles or cousins. But her entire world came crashing down when her results came through, linking her to a woman in Canada she knew nothing about.
Taking to Reddit, she said: "My boyfriend has a huge family and says he has enjoyed making his family tree along with some of his other family members. I got bitten by the bug and wanted to try mine especially because my family isn't huge. I only have my parents and two living grandparents.
"I wish I could take back this decision. I found I have an older half-sister in Canada."
After confronting her dad, she came to learn her father broke off a short relationship with the Canadian's mother after hearing she was pregnant.
"He told her to get rid of it and threatened to lie to get her deported," she added. "I don't think she was deported but her and my half-sister live in Canada.
"I didn't believe this when she told me because I thought I knew my dad. She provided me with evidence and my dad admitted everything to me but asked me not to tell my mum.
"My half-sister wants nothing to do with us and I hate feeling like I'm lying to my mum. I also can't see my dad the same way even though I thought he was the greatest before all this."
Confused, the woman has taken to social media to urge others not to go "poking around in the past and stirring up old secrets."
Commenting on her post, one user said: "I'm sorry this has caused a major rift in your life but your dad is a huge piece of s*** - that which can be destroyed by the truth should be."
Another user added: "When I did 23andMe a few years ago, I discovered that I had an older sister who shares my first name. Now every time I run into someone named Melissa, I wonder if we're related somehow."
A third user said: "I had a coworker who discovered she had a whole other half-family two towns over. She didn't think her dad had it in him..."
