I ate at Johnny Vegas' favourite café and the toast was thicker than the plate

Johnny Vegas is one of St Helens' most famous sons.

The actor and comedian was recently on our screens as he explored his family history on ITV's DNA Journey. The 52-year-old visited his "happy place" during the programme as he strolled up to Toast Coffee House and Café on Dentons Green Lane, St Helens.

Vegas described the café as a "cosy little retreat". Often ranking among the highest eateries in the town on review sites, Toast is a firm favourite, so the ECHO visited to see what all the fuss is about.

First impression upon arriving at Toast was that it was very busy for a Wednesday, every table, both inside and in the French-style walkway leading to the entrance was full of people tucking into their breakfast. After being greeted by a warm, smiling member of staff I was seated and given a menu.

While everything sounded delicious, I opted for the classic "Big Breakfast", which came with two sausages, two pieces of bacon, a hash brown, a poached or fried egg, beans, fried mushrooms, and toast. The meal also came with a pot of tea or a coffee, opting for the tea, I was brought a pot, and a cup of milk, allowing me to get around three cups - not bad for just £9.45.

The food arrived fairly quickly, despite how busy the staff were and I was amazed at the size of the breakfast, with two slices of toast that were thicker than the plate and the bacon and egg surrounded by a sea of beans.

The poached egg was a personal highlight, being cooked perfectly and tasting amazing. Crispy bacon and sausage is a classic combination with the beans, which was then mopped up with the behemoth slices of buttery toast.

The generous amounts of tea washed down the delicious mouthfuls, but I wasn't able to finish the monster breakfast, despite my best efforts.

Members of staff were helpful and friendly, asking if everything was good with the breakfast and if I needed anything else. It is clear to see why Toast is so popular in St Helens, and why Johnny named it a cosy retreat. It is exactly what you want to fuel your day and I will definitely be back.
