'I am capable' - Harvey Elliott makes bold Liverpool admission as season hopes outlined

Harvey Elliott says he is aiming to use pre-season as a springboard into the Liverpool team on a long-term basis.

And the versatile teenager hopes his performances can prove to manager Jurgen Klopp that he is worthy of regular Premier League minutes when the new season begins next month.

Elliott started in the 1-0 defeat to Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday night, playing off the right of the front three alongside new signings Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho and the youngster has also performed as part of a midfield trio at times across pre-season.

The former Fulham teen started three of Liverpool's first four Premier League games last term before suffering a long-term ankle injury that sidelined him from September to February, but he says he is now ready to re-stake a claim for spot in the side.

"I think I just need to go out there and show who I am again basically," Elliott told LFCTV. "Last season came with a lot of ups and downs and a lot of challenges for myself, but if anything has helped me towards this season, it's been there for me to go and show to myself and show to the fans and the world that I can get into the team and that is my main focus.

"It's just to work hard and improve in the minutes I get and I sort of do it for myself to go out and learn and take these situations in pre-season into my path and use it as a learning curve for myself.

"I am feeling great, I am feeling 100% now and this pre-season has been great for me, from start to finish. It's been intense, which is what I've needed. The minutes have been great in terms of going out and playing, being able to showcase my ability and the different situations that come along with it.

"So it's a lot of learning this season and more and more as the season goes on we're going to be learning different types of positions and ways, so I am looking forward to this season.

"Hopefully I can go out and prove again that I can be starting and should be starting in this team. The team just keeps bringing in more and more unbelievable talents, so it is going to be hard, but I am here if I am needed.

"I am always ready and I am always willing to give 100% to myself and for the team, the badge and the fans, because at the end of the day it's the club I love and the club I want to play for. So whenever I am given a chance I just want to make sure I can go out and prove to everyone I am capable of playing for this team."

Elliott also offered an insight into what it's been like for the 31-man contingent in Austria over the past week as double sessions have been put on to build up the fitness levels ahead of the new campaign which begins away at Fulham on August 6.

The 19-year-old added: "Spirits are high in the dressing room, it's not nice losing but there were a lot of positives to take and at least we got into the situations where we couldn't finish the chances off but let's hope we can do it at the weekend.

"It's been great, it's always nice to come out here and just to chill out because obviously in Austria we're very isolated and limited to what we can do so there's a lot of down-time and time to focus and reflect on certain situations in training and games.

"So it's been a great week, we've had a great time out here and the support we have received, wherever we go, it's been brilliant. It's just nice to see how many fans we have in all the different countries and how many people follow us around the world, so it's been another great experience for us in Austria.

"It's been a great camp, training has been high intensity, the games have been good, so overall it's been an amazing pre-season so far."
