Hyundai surges forward with IONIQ 5 upgrades

HYUNDAI has enhanced its global award-winning IONIQ 5 electric SUV by introducing a more powerful battery, tech improvements and a new flagship model.

The new 77.4kWh battery is available in all but the base model from the popular Korean marque, delivering a range of up to 315 miles, as is a video-based digital rear-view mirror.

Meanwhile, a new battery heater and conditioning feature is standard across the line-up and will enable the IONIQ 5 to adapt its battery temperature while travelling to support optimal charging conditions when reaching a power point.

And now topping the offerings is the £52,900 Namsan Edition that comes with a full-length panoramic roof, leather upholstery and special “relaxation” seats as well as digital side mirrors.

The entry-level SE Connect, priced from £39,400, has a 58kWh battery providing a range of up to 238 miles, with the rear-wheel-drive 170PS motor pushing it to 62mph in 8.5 seconds and on to 115mph.

Creature comforts include an impressive 12.3in infotainment system with sat nav, wireless device charging and adaptive cruise control.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate is among the models of the electric SUV being upgraded (Hyundai)

Costing from £41,900 on the road, Premium models now get a Vehicle to Load (V2L) system and partial leather upholstery as part of an upgraded interior.

Premium models are available with both the 58kWh and new 77.4kWh pack, which comes with the option of specifying all-wheel drive.

The bigger-battery RWD motor develops 228PS, which Hyundai reckons gives the IONIQ 5 a 0-62mph time of 7.3 seconds, while the top speed remains unchanged.

But the AWD variant is likely to please driving enthusiasts, with the 325PS on tap ensuring it hits 62mph in just 5.1 seconds.

Available from £48,400, the Ultimate trim now offers blind and surround view monitoring as standard, along with 20in alloy wheels, privacy glass, heated seats (also ventilated up front), BOSE premium sound system and an augmented reality head-up display.

The updated EV is available to order now, with first cars arriving towards the end of the year.

Hyundai UK boss Ashley Andrew said: “The IONIQ 5 has set the benchmark for both design and real-world electric vehicle usability and these enhancements will ensure this remains the case for some time to come.”
