- Hyundai is expanding a program that provides free home chargers to its EV buyers.
- Now the offer includes the 2024- and 2025-model-year Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.
- This makes total sense for selling more EVs, and more automakers should follow suit.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 are already some of the best electric vehicles you can buy in America—even if the latter isn't exactly topping the sales charts. Now the automaker is sweetening the deal with the offer of a free home charger with any lease or purchase of those cars.
Hyundai has had a program like this going since last summer, but the automaker announced on Monday that more models qualify now. Joining the party as of March 1 are the 2024 and 2025 Ioniq 6, along with the 2024 Ioniq 5. The 2025 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 5 N were already eligible. Here are some more details for you. Through the end of 2025, buyers and lessees of new Ioniq 5 and 6 models can get a complimentary ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 charger, or $400 in public charging credits they can use via the ChargePoint app. (Ioniq 5 N buyers get an extra $50 if they choose the charging credits.)
Importantly, customers are still on the hook for any costs associated with installing the unit, and they must get it hardwired into their home electrical system through a Hyundai-approved installer. Buyers have to claim the offer within 60 days of their vehicle purchase or lease, after which they have another 60 days to complete installation.
This seems like a no-brainer way to get more people to consider EVs. After all, charging is the most unfamiliar and scary part of switching away from gasoline. So, helping people get set up at home should do wonders for consumer confidence. One study recently found that 71% of car buyers would be more likely to buy an EV from a manufacturer that handles home charger installation.
It's no wonder we're seeing these kinds of free or discounted home charger offers expand and multiply. Ford's Power Promise, for example, offers a free Level 2 charger and covers basic installation costs on top of that. Especially for buyers looking to dip a toe into the EV world with a lease, a free or discounted Level 2 charger could make all the difference. Installation certainly helps, too, as many people don't know how to navigate the process.
Plus, Hyundai's latest promotion could do something else, and that's pull the Ioniq 6 out of the sales rut it's in. The sedan is one of the most efficient EVs out there, looks super interesting and provides some of the best range for your buck. But it's a sedan in an SUV's world and has perennially lived in the Ioniq 5 crossover's shadow.
Maybe a free ChargePoint charger will help the Ioniq 6 get the love it's always deserved.
