Hyperbaric technology used by stars such as Ronaldo and Justin Bieber available at Lanarkshire pharmacy

It's been used by the likes of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Now a hyperbaric chamber is available on the streets of Rutherglen, and chemists have high hopes it could benefit locals who suffer from chronic diseases.

Dickson's Chemists is the first pharmacy in Scotland to have the tool available, at its premises at the Rutherglen Exchange shopping centre.

The chambers were originally used for helping divers recover from decompression sickness, known as the bends, after emerging from underwater. However, in recent years they've helped people with a variety of ailments, from tiredness to serious conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

Last autumn, Swedish researchers carried out trials to examine if it can make a difference with long Covid as well.

Stephen Dickson, the managing director at the pharmacy, is optimistic it can help local residents.

He told Lanarkshire Live: "For decades it was originally used for helping the bends, but it also has other benefits, particularly for people with MS or chronic fatigue.

"Now it's believed that using the chamber could benefit people with long Covid. It's something that can help quite a lot of people with anything that's inflammatory, and we're really pleased to have it here in Rutherglen.

"Essentially, what happens is you lie in the chamber and then breathe in extra oxygen. We've had patients who have tried it before with positive results, which is why we started looking at bringing in one here."

The chambers have had celebrity support in the past.

Ronaldo has regularly used one to maintain his fitness levels and repair any damaged tissue, while pop superstar Bieber previously told how he was using one to help lower his stress levels and help his body recover from years of drug abuse.

Patients at the local pharmacy will first undergo a trial session to make sure they are suitable for the treatment, before undergoing further sessions.

However a session does cost £150.

Stephen added: "There's a lot of chat about it helps with anti-aging, which is also true, but that's a bit more complex how it works.

"There are a lot of benefits to having it in the area."
