Hurricane Ian flood surge leads to bodies being unearthed from graves in horror scenes

Bodies have been unearthed from their graves and seen bobbing around during flood surges in horror movie scenes after Hurricane Ian.

The Oakland Cemetery in Florida, which is less than 20 miles from Orlando, had been affected by the life-threatening storm after one casket was seen floating around the graveyard.

Residents rushed to the graveyard to make sure their loved ones hadn't been moved following the devastating storm.

In horror scenes from a movie one body, which had been exposed due to a fallen tree, was seen floating around after Oakland experienced "historic flooding".

The graveyard can be seen filled with fallen trees and debris as one man, who went to the cemetery to check his family member was still there, couldn't believe what he was seeing.

The unidentified man told Fox News: "Right now, it’s a lot. It’s kinda hard to really believe."

Tragically, he had only just buried his grandmother a week ago and was having to check she was still in the cemetery.

One resident said they were "panicked that their loved ones had been swept away" during Hurricane Ian.

Whilst family members rushed to the scene to check their recently buried loved ones hadn't been washed away.

Another man was due to bury his uncle on Saturday at the graveyard but was told due to the flooding it was highly unlikely now.

In addition, the cemetery told him it was sadly not going to be anytime soon as the operation to try and fix the graveyard could take months.

The man said: “I was born and raised in Oakland and unfortunately this is happening.”

As well as homes being battered and graves being washed away, the devastation of Hurricane Ian saw a pier in South Carolina collapse.

The Category 1 storm battered a pier on Pawleys Island with bits of the structure seen "floating south" after strong waves caused damaged to beaches.

The Pawleys Island Police Department confirmed the pier had been affected as the The National Hurricane Center warned South Carolina could face a "life-threatening storm surge."

Locals were being told to stay clear of the sea as the flooding wrecked havoc on residential streets.

The Governor for South Carolina, Henry McMaster, declared a state of emergency on Wednesday after residents braced themselves for the hurricane with public shelters opened.

Safe houses for residents to evacuate were opened - as infrastructure was set to face huge damage whilst the Category 1 storm barrelled its way towards the state.

Meanwhile, the Memorial Healthcare System in Florida was expecting 22 newborn babies to its hospital after the Fort Myers hospital was significantly damaged during the storm.

The infants are expected to be transferred via ambulances with the babies in needs of the most urgent care expected to be flown by helicopter, the hospital announced yesterday.
