Officials are expressing concern over the potential impact of Helene's massive storm surge, which is expected to reach far inland. Storm surge is a phenomenon caused by a hurricane's powerful onshore winds that force ocean water onto land.
According to Wakulla County Commissioner Ralph Thomas, models indicate that a storm surge of up to 20 feet could push water as far as 20 miles inland from the coast. This surge may potentially affect areas as far north as south Leon County and even reach Tallahassee to the north. Wakulla County, located south of Tallahassee, is currently experiencing rising water levels in its rivers and coastal areas.
Commissioner Thomas also noted that some roads in the county are already underwater due to the increasing water levels. The community is urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this critical time.
