Franklin County Commissioner Ricky Jones emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that a storm surge of up to 20 feet could significantly alter the landscape of Franklin County. Jones, who initially planned to stay in town to oversee recovery efforts, has now decided to evacuate with his family in light of the storm's expected strength.
Hurricane Helene is currently classified as a Category 2 storm, but experts predict that it may intensify before reaching land. Jones expressed his concern for the safety of residents in Franklin County, including Apalachicola, urging them to follow his example and leave the area to avoid potential harm.
“Please leave. Just please do. It’s not worth it. Just get out,” Jones emphasized. “It will either be here when you get back, or it won’t, but don’t leave yourself in harm’s way.”
