Hurricane Helene has made a historic landfall in Florida's Big Bend region as the strongest hurricane on record to hit the area. The Category 4 hurricane has brought with it life-threatening storm surge, flooding rainfall, and destructive winds, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service of 'unsurvivable' storm surge in Apalachee Bay.

Authorities have reported at least three deaths related to the storm:

  • In Florida, one person was killed when a sign fell and hit a car driving on Interstate 4 near Ybor City in Tampa, according to Governor Ron DeSantis.
  • In Georgia, two individuals lost their lives after being caught in a tornado associated with the storm system from Hurricane Helene in Alamo, as confirmed by the city's mayor.
