Severe weather from Hurricane Debby has caused significant disruptions to air travel in Florida, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implementing delays at Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers airports. The FAA has warned that these delays are expected to worsen as the storm progresses.
At Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport, flights are experiencing an average delay of two-and-a-half hours, while flights at Southwest Florida International Airport are delayed by an average of one hour, according to the FAA alert.
The FAA's airspace operations plan, made publicly available, states that Hurricane Debby is moving northeast across Florida, affecting airports in its path. This has led to a surge in flight cancellations nationwide, with Orlando, Tampa, and Miami bearing the brunt of the impact.
As of 11 a.m. EDT, FlightAware reports that over 1,500 US flights have been canceled. American Airlines has canceled approximately 10% of its Monday flights, while Southwest Airlines has canceled around 5%.
