Darren Henderson insists he can’t think about a push for the West of Scotland League Premier Division title until he knows Hurlford United are safe from the dreaded drop.
The cautious Blair Park boss has again adopted a safety-first approach due to the competitive nature of the west’s top flight.
Hurlford are currently fourth in the table – four points behind leaders Darvel – but eight clear of the relegation zone.
Henderson can’t help but look over his shoulder as he urged his players not to get carried away with their lofty status so far this season.
Reflecting on the campaign to date ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Newlandsfield to face Pollok, now bossed by ex-Kirkintilloch Rob Roy chief Stewart Maxwell, Henderson said: “We’re just lacking that wee bit of consistency.
"Okay, we were sitting second top before last week’s cup game [1-0 Junior Cup win over Troon] but it’s very very tight.
“Between third bottom and us near the top there’s just eight points. Just because we’re sitting in the top four doesn’t mean to say everything is rosy.
“We need to keep winning games. You’re looking at maybe getting 35 points – it’s crazy saying that when we were second top last week that we need to worry about staying in the league.
“We need to get back to league business soon – we’ve got Pollok and Auchinleck Talbot away from home in our next two and they don’t come any tougher than that.
“But so far the boys have been great. If you’d told me this is where we’d be at this stage of the season I’d have taken it all day long. We are also in the quarters of the Junior Cup and still in the West, so things are going okay.”
