Two children and six others were at home when a 25-year-old man was shot in a targeted attack on a Hunter Valley home yesterday.
The Heddon Greta man was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
NSW police were called to Traders Way, about 20 kilometres north-east of Cessnock, shortly before 11pm where they found a man with at least one gunshot wound.
Hunter Valley police district commander superintendent Tracy Chapman said the attack was targeted.
"At this stage, I don't believe that this was a random attack, certainly it would appear that it was targeted," she said.
"Members of the community have no reason to be concerned. I do not believe there is any risk to the community currently."
Superintendent Chapman said the man was known to police in a "limited capacity."
She said six adults and two children were present at the home during the incident.
Officers from the Hunter Valley police district and the homicide squad have formed Strike Force Roslyn to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
"It is highly likely that the offenders have fled the scene using a motor vehicle," Superintendent Chapman said.
Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage, or information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
