Prior to the 2020 election, 51 former intelligence officials signed a letter suggesting that the laptop bore characteristics of Russian disinformation. Additionally, Congressman Adam Schiff had propagated the idea that the laptop was part of a Russian propaganda effort. However, these claims were refuted by the then Director of National Intelligence, John Ratcliffe, who stated that there was no intelligence supporting the notion of Russian involvement in the laptop's contents.
