Today marks the first day of opening statements in the federal gun case against Hunter Biden in Wilmington, Delaware. The courtroom saw a strong showing from the first family, with the arrival of First Lady Jill Biden and Hunter Biden, accompanied by his attorney Abby Lowell.
Hunter Biden arrived about half an hour before the proceedings began, followed shortly by First Lady Jill Biden in her SUV. Also present were Hunter's sister Ashley and filmmaker Kevin Morris, who has been supporting Hunter's defense.
The opening arguments started with the prosecution presenting their case, followed by Hunter's attorneys. Each presentation is expected to last around 45 minutes. The special counsel will then begin presenting its case against Hunter, with the prosecution calling FBI Special Agent Erica Jensen as their first witness.
The jury selection process took up the entirety of the previous day in court, resulting in a jury of six women and six men. One of the jurors has a background working for the Secret Service, and at least half of them or their family members own firearms. Additionally, five jurors mentioned having friends or family members affected by drugs.
Hunter Biden is facing three felonies related to a 2018 gun purchase. Prosecutors allege that he lied on a federal firearm form regarding his drug use and illegally possessed the gun for a week and a half. The prosecution has indicated that they may call Hunter's ex-wife Kathleen Buell and Hallie Biden, the widow of Hunter's brother Beau Biden, as witnesses.
The judge has suggested that the trial could last a couple of weeks, with potential additional time for jury deliberations. The proceedings are expected to be closely watched as they unfold in the coming days.
