Hundreds of women gear up for skinny dipping event on Wicklow beach

Hundreds of women are set to take part in a skinny dip in Wicklow next month to raise money for an important cause.

Taking place on October 1 at Meagheramore Beach in County Wicklow, Strip & Dip is expected to attract just under 1,000 women to take part.

Money raised from the event will go to Aoibheann's Pink Tie, a charity which provides financial practical support to families with children who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Strip & Dip founder and organiser Deirdre Featherstone explained where the idea for the event came from and revealed 2022 marks ten years of her being cancer free.

She told us: "I was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and I've since had a mastectomy."

Deirdre came up with the idea for Strip & Dip while at home enjoying a glass of wine. Having attracted 45 participants in its first year in 2013, 2022 sees the 8th Strip & Dip taking place, having had one cancellation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"In 2018, we set the Guinness World Record for the world's largest skinny dip with 2,500 people taking part," Deirdre told us.

"The atmosphere on the day is absolutely electric. It's just like one big party."

She added: "A lot of the women there have been though cancer or are going through cancer.

"It's a very emotional and moving day, but it's also great fun.

"I call us the warrior women. It's beautiful and great fun."

In Deirdre's tenth year of being cancer free, she and other participants are hoping to smash the €1 million mark, having already raised a staggering almost €900,000 since the first Strip & Dip event in 2013.

Aoibheann's Pink Tie has always been the charity to which monies raised go, and funds from the event have even paid for a respite house in Crumlin.

Those who wish to take part in Strip & Dip can register at stripanddip.ie. Once registered, you will be set up with an iDonate account through which your friends and family can sponsor your brave efforts.

Others who want to support can also donate money through the website.
