Hundreds of people queue for hours to buy fish and chip meal for 45p instead of £8.75

Hundreds of hungry customers queued for hours for a plate of fish and chips for just 45p.

A new Mother Hubbard's chip shop opened today in Erdington with an incredible offer as punters started queuing at 9am.

The chip shop saw queues snake down the road as hundreds waited for the blue ribbon to be cut at 11am.

Many were eager to get their 45p deal of a big piece of battered fish and a tray of chips, BirmimghamLive reports.

One customer was seen taking seven portions home to feed their family.

Typically, the shop would also offer chop shop staples like pies and battered sausage, chicken strips and nuggets and fish cakes.

But for the opening day special it was just fish and chips with extras like mushy peas and soft drinks available to buy.

This meal would normally cost £8.75.

As customers queued, staff from Mother Hubbard’s handed out bottled water.

Two fire eaters and breathers were also brought along to entertain those waiting.

Manager, Chris Thornton, said: “It’s been brilliant. I have calmed down now after being nervous about what was going to happen.

"It’s turned out really good. We have got 1,000 fish ready and we are over the moon with the response. We have had a lot of customers asking when we are opening in the week.”

Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner, Wasim Ali, added: “It’s a great thing for the local community. Local businesses are at the heart of the local community, not just fish and chip shops. Business leaders are undervalued.

“They often have a big role in keeping communities together. They are great places for conversation. We need to do all we can to support them. This is showing Erdington is a vibrant, bright area and has a long economic future.”
