Hundreds of number plates blacklisted as the DVLA announces bans for 2022

Hundreds of number plates have been blacklisted as the DVLA unveils its latest list of banned plates for 2022.

Figures show that a total of 343 have already been banned by the motoring body. They can be banned for a number of reasons including ones that are rude, crude, or x-rated.

Others are downright offensive and could be deemed as racist or sexist. And now those, among with others, have now been banned under the DVLA's bi-annual crackdown.

BirminghamLive has opted to only publish a selection of the banned plates. Among them are F22 KER, BA22 TRD, A22 HLE, and TU22 URD. Covid related number plates have also been banned, including CO22 RNA, CO22 ONA and CO22 VD.

As well as this, two-tone number plates - which use extra colours to make the letters appear 3D - are being banned to allow number plate recognition cameras to better read lettering. The new rules are all part of a new standard of number plates.

The old standard used BS AU 145d plates, which have been in use since September 2001, according to the Mirror. The new standard is BS AU 145e, which is being rolled out shortly.

A spokesman said: "The vast majority of registration numbers are made available but the agency holds back any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment, or are in poor taste.

"Many people enjoy displaying a personalised registration number and there are over 50 million registrations available on our website with almost endless possibilities of combinations to suit a person’s taste, interests and budget."
