Hundreds of Jacob's staff strike outside factory in row over pay

Workers at Jacob's Bakery formed a large picket line outside the entrance to the factory as part of a dispute over pay.

A large number of workers at the factory formed the picket line for a second day in a series of 12 hour stoppages at the site. Hundreds of members of staff at the site in Aintree first walked out on Monday, September 26 in a fight for a "fairer pay deal".

The Jacob's factory on Long Lane produces millions of cream crackers each year - with more than half a billion individual crackers sold each year. The site has been operating in Aintree for over 100 years and it was the first Jacob's factory to be built in England.

The ECHO understands the GMB Union put forward an 8.5% pay rise proposal which was "refused". A worker, who did not want to be named, previously told the ECHO staff would strike "until a deal is reached".

A spokesperson for GMB told the ECHO staff would be taking strike action against Pladis, who own Jacob's, after members "voted overwhelmingly in favour of both strike action and action short of a strike". They added: "The action short of strike commenced on September 5 in the form of an overtime ban and a ban on training colleagues on the transfer of skills. September 26 [was] the first in a series of 12-hour stoppages at the site."

Today around one hundred Jacob's factory members formed a picket line outside the factory's entrance. Photos taken by the ECHO showed a large amount of GMB Union flags and banners. The GMB Union Branch 84 tweeted a photo of the workers, and said: "Never give up the fight, give our members a proper pay rise, not your crumbs."

A video posted on Twitter by GMB staff showed Branch 84 secretary Tim Collins at the gates. He said: "We are prepared to do what we need to do. We are going to continue with the action until we get a proposal from the company with a proper pay deal that rewards our members with what they deserve."

A spokesperson for Pladis previously told the ECHO : "I can confirm that we have been informed by the GMB that some of its members at our factory in Aintree are intending to take strike action. We are continuing to proactively engage with our employees and their representatives to seek a resolution."
