Hundreds of homes without power as 'sparks' fly off powerline

Hundreds of homes are without electricity this morning after a huge power cut.

People living in the Wallasey, Bidston and Moreton areas of Wirral were affected by the issue which comes less than 24 hours after another power cut in the same area.

One woman said she saw "sparks coming off a power line" near to Bidston Station this morning and traffic lights in the area had stopped working. The woman said she got home to find she had no power and "burglar alarms were going off everywhere".

SP Energy Networks said in a statement: "There is a power cut affecting the CH44, CH45 and CH46 postcode areas of Wallasey, Bidston and Moreton. We had no advance warning of this and first became aware of it at 7:40 am.

"We are aware of the previous power cut affecting your area and we apologise for this. Our engineers have arrived on site and will work to restore your electricity supply as quickly and as safely as possible.

"We expect the power to be restored by 9:45 am. The latest updates can be found on our website www.spenergynetworks.co.uk. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience."
