Hundreds of drivers caught breaking the same law as gardai place checkpoints nationwide

Gardai have been running checkpoints up and down the country today in line with National Slow Down Day.

Within the first twelve hours of the operation, a whopping 108,231 vehicles had their speed checked by officers, and a total of 486 drivers were caught breaking the limit.

Among the worst offenders on Thursday was one driver who was caught at 142 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N83 at Beagh Brownsgrove Galway.

Similarly, another driver was found to be going 140km/h in an 80km/h Zone on the N4 Doddsborough Lucan Dublin.

One was detected driving 103km/h in an 80km/h Zone on the R448 Crookstown Upper Ballytore Kildare.

Six other drivers were found driving over 80km/h in 50km/h zones across Donegal, Dublin, Offaly, Mayo, and Wexford.

In a statement released this evening, gardai confirmed that: “In the first 12 hours of National Slow Down Day (07:00 to 19:00), An Garda Síochána and GoSafe checked the speed of 108,231 vehicles and detected 486 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.”

“An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.”

In Ireland, it is an offence to drive over the speed limit. Our document on speed limits in Ireland describes the different speed limits in operation.

If you drive over the speed limit, you will get 3 penalty points and a fixed charge fine of €80. If you do not pay the fine within 28 days, it increases to €120.
