Hundreds call for removal of 'unnecessary' Gedling bus plug causing tailbacks

A petition to remove a Nottinghamshire bus plug that councillors say is causing tailbacks has garnered hundreds of signatures. Councillors have appealed for the bus plug on Burton Road in Gedling, near its junction with Colliery Way (formerly Gedling Access Road), to be removed by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Trent Valley ward councillors Mike Adams and Sam Smith urged locals to sign a petition to remove the bus plug, which hundreds have now done, citing problems with the measure. "Here on Burton Road we have a bus plug that was effective back in the day but is no longer effective, you've got the Gedling Access Road traffic lights just a few hundred yards down [the road].

"With two sets of lights in such close proximity it causes tailbacks along Burton Road," Mr Smith said. "We recognise the problems this is causing on your way to work, on your way to school. It can't be doing anything for the local environment with the additional engines waiting," Mr Adams added.

Around 400 people have signed the online petition to Nottingham County Council, which was started by Mr Smith. The petition said: "The bus-plug on Burton Road in Gedling, near its junction with the Colliery Way (GAR), is no longer necessary. Its traffic lights are within a few metres of the new traffic lights at the junction of Colliery Way as it connects to the A612.

"This close proximity between the two sets of traffic lights and the bus-plugs single lane causes tailbacks, particularly during peak times. These tailbacks delay journeys and cause additional carbon to be emitted by cars idling next to a school." Nottinghamshire County Council was contacted for comment.
