Humza Yousaf to attend Coronation as gun salutes, ceilidhs and street parties take place across Scotland

Various events will take place across Scotland to mark the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

There will be gun salutes at Edinburgh and Stirling Castles as well as ceilidhs, street parties and charity events. The ceremony will also be shown on big screens at different locations, including Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh and Glasgow Cathedral.

The Scottish Government will be represented at the event in Westminster Abbey by First Minister Humza Yousaf, Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain and Permanent Secretary John-Paul Marks.

The King will be presented with the Honours of Scotland at a separate Scottish Service of Dedication and Thanksgiving, which will take place at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh later this year.

Yousaf said: “I will attend at the Coronation ceremony as First Minister, on behalf of the Scottish people - and many people across the country will also take part in the celebrations by watching the ceremony on big screens, hosting street parties or taking part in charity or volunteering.

“I look forward to participating in the ceremony when His Majesty is presented with the Honours of Scotland at a Service at St Giles’ Cathedral later this year.

“The King’s longstanding connection to Scotland is well known - through his patronage of many Scottish charities and institutions, including the Prince’s Foundation.

“Queen Camilla has also built strong ties with communities over many years, including through her role as Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen.

“I know many people in Scotland will want to send their best wishes to King Charles III and Queen Camilla on this historic occasion.”

The Royal Standard will fly over St Andrew’s House in Edinburgh - the Scottish Government's headquarters - for the Coronation weekend. This is the flag which represents the monarch and the United Kingdom

There will also be a service at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh later this year. It will include viewing opportunities for the public and details will be issued in the coming weeks.

Towns and cities, from Gretna to Shetland and Dunoon to Dundee, also set to hold their own events, with Coronation Big Lunch events will take place across the country. These will include street parties, galas, picnics, fancy dress parades and more.

The National Lottery-funded Big Lunch is the UK’s largest annual community celebration and was set up in 2009.

Ballater in Aberdeenshire, which neighbours the Balmoral estate, will host one of these events.

The King made one of his first visits to the village after the death of his mother to thank residents for their support of the late Queen on her final journey.

On Sunday hundreds are expected to join the Coronation Big Lunch at the Church Green in celebration of his coronation.

The most northerly event is set to be hosted on Saturday in Scalloway, Shetland. The islands' youth centre is the setting for a celebration featuring sea shanties, a hat dressing competition, stories, games and more.
