Humza Yousaf to announce Programme for Government – here's how to watch

THE First Minister will announce his first Programme for Government in Holyrood on Tuesday afternoon.

A range of announcements are expected although it is understood there will be a focus on poverty, childcare and the economy.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to a nursery in Dundee on Monday, Yousaf said he planned to help tackle poverty and boost the economy by bringing people back into the workforce.

What is the Programme for Government?

The Programme for Government is published every year in early September and sets out the actions the Scottish Government will take in the coming year and beyond.

The FM will make a number of announcements on a wide variety of areas although he gave little away during his chat with the press on Monday.

However, he did commit to take action to protect people living in the private rented sector.

When is the Programme for Government announced and how can I watch?

The announcement should be made shortly after 2pm. A meeting of the Scottish Parliament is scheduled to begin then with some topical questions being taken before the announcement.

The Programme for Government can be watched via the Scottish Parliament TV player which can be found HERE.

What has Humza Yousaf already said?

The Programme for Government will come against a background of struggling public finances, with a £1 billion black hole expected in next year’s Scottish budget.

Asked if this could impact his ability to make a mark, Yousaf said: “There’ll definitely be some initiatives that I hope will demonstrate the direction I want to take the Government, but there’s no getting away from the scale of the public finances and the challenge that we face in relation to those public finances.

“It’s the most difficult time, certainly I’ve ever seen for the public finances, and I’ve been in government for 11 years.

“We know because of the disaster of the mini budget last year from the UK Government that public finances are not just going to be constrained for the year ahead, but I’m afraid for probably many years to come.”
