Human remains found in woodland as police launch probe into gruesome discovery

Police are investigating after human remains were found in woodlands on Thursday.

Officers have today stressed there’s no need for public concern despite the grim discovery in Mumbles, near Swansea.

Inquiries continue at the location, South Wales Constabulary added this afternoon.

Further information is expected as inquiries develop at the scene, Wales Online reports. No further details, including the gender of the body, have been disclosed though at this stage.

The woodland is behind houses in the coastal neighbourhood. It is believed a member of the public there made the grim discovery on Thursday.

Writing online, people in the community shared their thoughts and paid their respects to the deceased.

"This is so sad. My thoughts go to the family," one person said.

"RIP... Such terrible news for the family," another resident shared on Facebook.

A third wrote: "Thank goodness I'm further away from there."

Witnesses told how there was a great deal of police activity on Thursday afternoon.

One resident posted on social media: "There was lots of police there all day and forensics too. They have been questioning neighbours but they wouldn't say what's happened at the time."

The man said he saw at least three police vehicles at the scene.

Mumbles is a headland on the western edge of Swansea Bay - which sits on the southern coast of Wales.
