Hulu has decided to cancel the mystery series Death and Other Details after just one season, which concluded less than a month ago. The show, consisting of ten episodes, starred Mandy Patinkin and Violett Beane as they embarked on a journey to solve a series of murders while aboard an ocean liner.
Despite a promising premise, Death and Other Details received mixed reviews, with a 55% critical score and a 66% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show failed to make it into Nielsen's Top 10 streaming rankings during its run.
One of the major criticisms of the series was its pacing, with the mystery losing its initial intrigue as the likely answer became apparent midway through the season. The narrative was also faulted for meandering and introducing ineffective red herrings, making it challenging for viewers to stay engaged.
Furthermore, many of the characters in Death and Other Details were deemed unlikable or underdeveloped, failing to create a strong connection with the audience. The relationship between the characters Rufus Cotesworth and Imogene Scott was one of the few aspects that received some praise for its development.
While the first season of Death and Other Details did set up a potential second season with a cliffhanger ending, the show's cancellation was not unexpected given its struggles to captivate viewers and critics alike.
Death and Other Details joins the list of recently canceled Hulu shows, including How I Met Your Father, The Fool, and The Great, although these had longer runs than Death and Other Details.
Despite its cancellation, Death and Other Details season 1 remains available for streaming on Hulu for those who wish to watch the mystery unfold.
Created by Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams, Death and Other Details follows Imogene Scott as she becomes entangled in a murder mystery aboard a luxury cruise liner and teams up with Detective Rufus Cotesworth to clear her name.
