Hull street evacuated over 'home-made bomb' with police rushing to cordon off area

People on a housing estate have been evacuated following the discovery of a suspicious package residents claim they have been told is a "homemade bomb".

One road in Bransholme, Hull, is completely sealed off as police investigate the item. They are yet to disclose its identity but residents have claimed it is a bomb attached to a jerry can.

One resident told Hull Live : "It's a jerry can, we were told it had a cable and maybe a device attached. We were then evacuated."

Humberside Police has asked people to avoid the area while officers continue to gather information.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers issued a 100 metre safety cordon on Welshpool Close, Bransholme, following the discovery of a suspicious package earlier today (Saturday, 14 May).

"The cordon has now been extended to 400 metres whilst awaiting EOD to arrive at the scene to examine the item.

"Evacuations are taking place and residents are being advised of the procedures to follow. Please avoid the area until we are able to advise otherwise."

James Handley, who has been evacuated, believes his neighbour has been "targeted".

The dad said: "From the sounds of it, it's one of our neighbours who's been targeted. [The bomb] was slap bang outside my garden. Whether it's real or not, it's disgusting."

He added: "Whoever's done it, whether it's some sick joke or not, it's horrible for everybody.

"If it is real that's really worrying - I've got kids. I want to know who's done it."

Cordons are at both ends of Cumbrian Way closing off the road to motorists and pedestrians.

Photos show at least two ambulances at the scene.
