Hugo Lloris discloses texts with Harry Kane after England penalty heartache

Hugo Lloris has revealed he has texted Harry Kane to offer his support - and insisted the England captain will recover from his World Cup heartbreak.

England captain Kane was left devastated after missing a last gasp penalty against Tottenham team mate Lloris in Saturday’s quarter final. Lloris has already been in touch with Kane and he says other big players have missed big penalties in the past and still recovered.

France captain Lloris said: “I don't need to go too much further, but we had a text after the game, but it was not easy to find the words straight after the game in the changing room.

“I think he needed some rest, but it was a difficult time for the England national team and for Harry. But I think he can be proud of what he's done for the national team during this World Cup. I think in football history many top players miss important penalties.

“Players like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe - and I've no doubt Harry will keep his chin up and continue to shine for Tottenham and his national team."

Kane was in tears after the France defeat and has now been given a week off by Tottenham to recover for the rest of the Premier League season.

Tottenham resume their Premier League season against Brentford on Boxing Day and Spurs boss Antonio Conte is also planning to speak to Kane to offer his support.

Lloris is hoping to become the first captain to win back-to-back World Cups as France face Morocco in Wednesday night’s semi final. France are red-hot favourites to reach the final and retain the trophy they won four years ago.

Lloris added: “France v Morocco is a game between two strong football sides, two talented teams. But each side has a specific objective - to qualify for the final.”
