Hugo Ekitike speaks out on January interest from Newcastle United

At various stages of the January transfer window it seemed that Hugo Ekitike was set to become a Newcastle United player. The young French forward attracted the Magpies attention as one of the breakout talents in European football and Eddie Howe's team was in need of a little more firepower for the second half of the season.

In the end, Ekitike remained at Reims and went on to score nine goals in just 23 appearances for the French club. Meanwhile, Newcastle's relegation worries faded quickly, as a strong run of form beginning in January carried them comfortably into mid-table.

The 19-year-old has spoken out about his Newcastle links, in an interview with L'Equipe, saying 'the timing wasn't right' for a move to St James' Park. Ekitike was asked by L'Equipe why he didn't move to Newcastle in January.

"I have a lot of respect for that big club. But it was all happening very quickly, the timing wasn’t right. It was better to stay here, to play a full season, to establish myself."

It may well be the case that the Magpies return with another bid for the youngster in the summer. Speaking about the summer ahead, Ekitike admitted, "I see it being lively! I think people will show interest in me. On my end, I’ll stay calm because I’m surrounded by the right people to manage all of that."
