Fresh Hugo Ekitike transfer claim with talks held over possible '5-year-deal'

Newcastle United have held further positive talks with Ligue 1 side Reims over the transfer of forward Hugo Ekitike. With the fee believed to be in the region of €30m (£25.6m) for the player, a five-year-deal is now reported to have been agreed.

The Magpies have long been an admirer of the France Under 21 star and did try to purchase the striker back in January. However, the move since stalled with both the club and the player's representatives now said to be edging closer to agreeing a summer move.

Netting an impressive 11 goals in 24 appearances last season, the 19-year-old is said to be keen on a switch to the Premier League, with Eddie Howe eager to improve his attacking options heading into next season.

Enjoying a breakthrough campaign in France, Ekitike has been rewarded with over 100 minutes of football this term, making good on his return as number nine. Despite suffering a lengthy lay-off with a hamstring injury, his stats make for strong viewing.

With United's only other options at present Callum Wilson and Chris Wood, Ekitike's presence will bring a youthful attacking bite to a largely ageing striker department at St. James Park.

Sky Sports News have since broke the news today that the player's representatives were allowed to speak to the Premier League club as the two teams continue to finalise a deal. Reims are willing to allow the player to move but only for the correct fee.

The centre forward averaged a goal every 133 minutes during the 21/22 season and, including assists, Ekitike averages a scoring contribution every 97 minutes. Reims finished 12th in Ligue 1 last season with 46 points.
