Hugh Grant hailed 'a god' after £10,000 donation to help Brits with the cost of living

Hugh Grant has been hailed as a "god" after donating thousands of pounds to a charity aiming to help struggling Brits with the rising cost of living crisis.

The Notting Hill actor, 61, recently financially contributed to a GoFundMe created to help those struggling to pay their bills for a third time - after previously donating tens of thousands of pounds to the cause.

Hugh - who has become a prominent political activist over recent years - has been praised for trying to help "save many lives" thanks to her generous charitable contributions.

James Anderson, founder of Depher, praised the dad-of-three for his philanthropy on Thursday morning, after the most recent donation had been verified by GoFundMe.

"If I could rename Jesus, I would call him Hugh," the 54-year-old from Burnley told the PA news agency.

"We’ve now (got) a free boiler for a 94-year-old lady because of Hugh.

"There’s another lady who has a brain tumour, (she) and her husband haven’t had heating or hot water for 17 months and now they will get a new boiler … because of Hugh.

"It’s not that it helps towards or makes life a little bit easier – it actually saves lives."

James has helped over 39,000 families get free heating and hot water in their homes since his fundraiser launched in 2017.

The payment by the Love Actually actor was made to the charity’s most recent GoFundMe, which has now raised over £47,000 as James hopes to have Depher operating in every town and city in the UK.

The charity founder explained that he had conversed with Hugh over Twitter, where the British star had voiced his respect for James' work.

"He respects me and he’s got a lot of compassion for what we do," he told PA.

"In my opinion, that man will always be my brother.

"I might never see him, I might never meet him, but he’ll always be my brother."

The donation from Hugh will cover nearly a third of James' monthly spend for those without heating or hot water.

"He’s given a medicine to an illness we’re all fighting," the campaigner said.

"I will share the shoes off my feet, I will sell everything I own, I’ll even remortgage my house and sell my false teeth as long as I know these children are being fed again.

"And even though (Hugh) is miles away, he still gets involved because he watches, he listens, he understands and he knows where we’re coming from."

In a tweet shared from his account on Thursday morning, James shared a screenshot of the actor's substantial donation and wrote: " Today the amazing @HackedOffHugh gave a donation of £10,000 to @Depheruk.

"Mr Grant is a Huge supporter of Depher, as we are of him.

"Thank you so much, this will save many lives."

Hugh isn't the only famous face to becoming in the ongoing cost of living crisis in the U.K over recent months.

Speaking on Loose Women last month, Stacey Solomon discussed her experience receiving benefits before finding fame, during a discussion about rising household bills.

"When I had Zachary at 17, 18, I got a Sure Start Grant, it was called at the time, and I can't tell you how much that saved my life," the popular presenter recalled on the ITV show.

"My working tax credits saved our life, we could not have got by without those. The milk tokens that we used to get to help us buy SMA and milk and stuff from the shops that we couldn't afford."

"All of that got abolished. Like some of my friends who are in similar circumstances now don't even have those opportunities, they're completely taken away from people and then they turn around and go, 'oh look, we're in a cost of living crisis, let's roll out £400'.

"It's too little too late," she continued when discussing the government handling of the energy bill crisis.
