Auctioneer Hugh Edmeades had an unfortunate fall during the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction this afternoon (Saturday, February 12).
"Mr. Hugh Edmeades, the IPL Auctioneer, had an unfortunate fall due to Postural Hypotension during the IPL Auction this afternoon. The medical team attended to him immediately after the incident & he is stable. Mr. Charu Sharma will continue with the Auction proceedings today," read the latest statement issued by the IPL.
A BCCI source told PTI, "He has been attended to by a doctor. He is doing fine, his blood pressure dropped suddenly and that was the reason for his sudden collapse. We will know more once he has a thorough check-up."
What is Postural Hypotension?
Postural or Orthostatic hypotension is a condition where a person's blood pressure quickly drops as he/she stands up from a sitting or lying position. When you're seated or in a resting position, it is easy for the blood from your legs to flow to the heart. But as you stand up, gravity comes in play and makes it difficult for the blood in your lower body to travel to your heart. The body then works to push blood upward to supply oxygen to the brain and other organs and muscles in the body. If it is unable to do so, it can cause the blood pressure to temporarily drop. That said, postural hypotension is also a form of low blood pressure.
Are there any symptoms?
The most common symptom includes lightheadedness or dizziness. However, it lasts for a few minutes. In certain cases, a person may collapse as was the case with Hugh Edmeades.
Other common signs of postural hypotension are as follows:
- Blurry vision
When does postural hypotension become alarming?
While occasional and temporary dizziness due to postural hypotension is normal and nothing to worry about, if the condition becomes recurrent and if you continue to have frequent symptoms, you must consult a doctor immediately. This may signal a more grievous problem.
