Huge sperm whale spotted motoring down M62 on back of truck leaves drivers gobsmacked

A huge sperm whale was seen hurtling down a motorway as stunned drivers looked on in shock.

The 12 metre-long beast was seen tied to the back of a flatbed truck on a stretch of the M62 yesterday.

Concerned drivers were left wondering what on earth was going on as the massive whale was transported along the busy road at around 3pm, near Junction 38 for North Cave in East Riding of Yorkshire.

One person took to Twitter with a video of the mammoth mammal and said: "Watch out for sperm whales on the M62 #motorwhale."

However, the mystery was soon solved.

It's believed the whale was a very realistic fake. Over the past fortnight, a fake replica whale has featured as an art installation in Redcar on Teesside and more recently in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

The same whale was also spotted on the A1 a fortnight ago, HullLive reports.

The whale is the creation of Belgian artistic group Captain Boomer Collective, which specialises in creating location-based shows that explore the boundaries between reality and fiction.

The whale art installation, simply titled 'Whale', features a replica of an over 12-metre long sperm whale, "beached" on the coast. Artists play the roles of scientists carrying out a post-mortem examination.

The realistic model of a sperm whale was recently installed at Whitehaven Harbour in Cumbria, where locals mistook it for a genuine beached whale (Kev Howard / Eden Arts / SWNS)

The whale is installed at each location overnight and gives off the smell of decay, further heightening the sense of realism. The art installation is aimed to provoke discussion about pollution and the environment.

Captain Boomer Collective said of the show: "The beached whale is a gigantic metaphor for the disruption of our ecological system. People feel their bond with nature is disturbed. The game between fiction and reality reinforces this feeling of disturbance."

The whale has previously popped up in Greenwich, Paris and Madrid.
