Huge search launched for missing boy, 12, as police and coastguards scour area

A huge search including helicopters and the Coastguard has been launched to find a 12-year-old boy who has gone missing from his home.

Richard Phorrington, from Shoreham, was last seen going out of his house at 7.30pm on Monday evening, said police.

It is understood that The National Police Air Service (NPAS) Helicopter along with ground units from Sussex Police assisted by the Coastguard and Shoreham RNLI inshore lifeboat are all involved in the search.

Police have said that they are "concerned" for the welfare of the boy who they believe is likely to be carrying a torch.

Richard has been described as slim and around 5ft 3in tall, while when he was last seen he was wearing a long black jacket with a hood, dark jeans, black socks - but he was not wearing shoes.

Police are appealing to the public for anyone with information about Richard to come forward.

A Sussex Police statement read: "We are concerned for the welfare of missing Richard Phorrington, 12, from Shoreham.

"He was last seen leaving his home address at 7.30pm on Monday (January 16) but has not been seen since.

"Richard is described as being slim, around 5’3” tall and was wearing a long black jacket with a hood, dark jeans, black socks and wasn’t wearing any shoes.

"It is likely Richard is carrying a torch.

"Anyone with information of Richard’s whereabouts is asked to call 999 quoting serial number 1159 of 16/01."

It comes with freezing temperatures and up and down the country and there is a yellow warning from the Met Office for ice along the south coast of England.

It will run until 10am on Tuesday and states: "Ice likely to cause difficult driving conditions at first this morning."
