Huge redevelopment at Great Northern Warehouse could mean the end for Odeon's city centre cinema

Odeon has confirmed it is ‘aware’ of plans to redevelop the Great Northern Warehouse which would see the ‘removal’ of its cinema.

The plans were released for consultation on Wednesday (September 7). They also revealed an ambition for the complex to build two towers containing 750 apartments, and create a ‘green oasis’ outside the venue.

However, one of the most eye-catching details is the aforementioned ‘removal’ of the 1990s ‘Leisure Box’ extension and cinema. Currently, Great Northern is home to Odeon, who moved into the site in 2017.

Now, the cinema chain has confirmed it is ‘aware’ of the plans. A spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News: “ODEON is aware of the consultation process at the Great Northern Warehouse complex and the proposed plans, and continues to provide guests with its services as normal.”

On announcing the plans, the owners’ — Trilogy Property — Founder and CEO, Robert Wolstenholme, said these plans continue to put ‘community’ at the forefront of the development. He added: "I'm hugely proud of our local team who have worked so hard to get us to the point where we are able to talk to the public about the potential for this much-loved site in Central Manchester.

“Our proposals put community, sustainability and local business at the heart of plans for The Great Northern. We look forward to progressing the scheme to achieve the best outcome for the city."

The public are being invited to have their say on the plans online through Great Northern’s website.

There will also be consultation events at the Village Hall — in Deansgate Mews — on Wednesday September 7 (12–7pm), Saturday September 10 (12–6pm), Thursday September 15 (12–7pm), and Sunday September 18 (12–6pm).
