Huge police response as masked gang cause chaos in Lanarkshire town

Cops raced to Uddingston on Saturday night following reports of masked youths running riot in the street.

Locals reported seeing blue lights tear through Bothwell Main Street on their way to the Porters Well and Old Glasgow Road areas of neighbouring Uddingston.

Social media posts claimed dozens of teenagers were seen carrying baseball bats and wearing balaclavas, leading to the heavy police response in the area.

One woman said it had been "mental" counting nine police cars and vans passing by her window, others said they had seen around 20 vehicles pass-by.

Another person warned people to stay safe and posted: "About 12 young boys age 13-15 years od running around Old Glasgow Road dressed in all black and wearing black ski masks. One boy also had a baseball bat. Just to make everyone aware of this and be caution.

"I have already reported this to police and they are out and about looking for them."

Several locals reponded saying they had witnessed the gang in the area with one woman saying her child had been "really scared."

A Police Scotland source told Lanarkshire Live: “We were made aware of groups of youths causing a disturbance in the Main Street and Old Glasgow Road areas of Uddingston around 5.15pm and again at around 7pm on Saturday, February 4.

“Officers attended and engaged with those present. No reports of any assault were made.

“We know that anti-social behaviour has a disruptive effect on local communities and will act on any information we receive. We will take appropriate action where incidents are reported and offenders identified.

"Anyone who has concerns about anti-social behaviour in their area is encouraged to contact police by calling 101 as promptly as possible."
