Huge police chase comes to abrupt end as driver runs out of FUEL

Officers chased a reportedly stolen car for more than half an hour before it finally came to a stop for an unexpected reason. Police began following the white Ford Fiesta in Lancashire before being led on a huge pursuit through Greater Manchester and towards West Yorkshire.

Teams from Greater Manchester Police joined Lancashire Police in pursuit of the car, including traffic police and the dogs unit, while a police helicopter was also dispatched to hunt down the driver. But with the chase lasting 35 minutes, it was brought to a sudden halt for a bizarre reason.

Having started in Lancashire and travelled through Bolton before heading east towards the Yorkshire border, the Ford Fiesta could not go any further when the car suddenly ran out of fuel. It meant officers could finally arrest the driver, who had been followed across the north west by a major police response.

GMP says the driver was arrested for multiple offences. The Ford Fiesta was also recovered.

In a post on Twitter this morning (May 3), a spokesperson for GMP Traffic wrote: "Stolen vehicle was pursued by Lancashire Police Tactical Operations into GMP Bolton South, pursuit continued by GMP Traffic, GMP Dogs and the National Police Air Service north west for around 35 minutes before the vehicle approached the West Yorkshire border and ran out of fuel! Driver arrested for several offences and vehicle recovered."
