Huge plumes of black smoke fill sky as fire breaks out in London building

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) were today called to a blaze in central London after reports of smoke.

Plumes of black smoke were seen rising above Victoria after a fire broke out at 12:37pm on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire is now under control and LFB confirmed that there were no reports of injuries or evacuations.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

LFB confirmed they received 12 calls about the fire, which is reported to have been highly visible, on the top floor of the building, but not large.

Around 8 fire engines were called the tackle the blaze, with over 60 firefighters in attendance, the fire service confirmed.

"Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are tackling a fire in a building on Wilton Road in Victoria," London Fire Brigade said when the blaze broke out. "Please avoid the area if possible."

In an update, they added: "The fire in #Victoria is in a building under construction. Waste material on the 7th floor is alight."

The building, on the site of Stockley House, is directly opposite Victoria station, one of London's busiest stations.

Network Rail confirmed to the Mirror that their services or the station were not affected by the fire, though the nearby Wilton Road was shut as firefighters tackled the blaze.

People nearby were asked to avoid the area.

The blaze was confirmed to be in a building under construction known as Stockley House, where waste material on the seventh floor was alight.

The fire brigade has since said: "The fire in Victoria is under control. There were no reports of any injuries."

The demolition of Stockley House was confirmed in April 2015 by the City of Westminster Applications Committee.

The building was erected in the 1980s, but was met with a proposal for a residential building with 109 units, just 25 years later.

The proposed site, according to the 2015 planning permission form, is a 15-story building.
