Plans to create the largest urban public space in the South West for more than half a century have been approved.
YTL Developments has received approval from South Gloucestershire Council to create a 15-acre sustainable public park at the centre of Brabazon - a major new neighbourhood on Bristol’s northern edge.
The 15-acre green space, which is equivalent to the size of Castle Park in the city centre, will be located on the site of the former Filton Airfield – the birthplace of Concorde - and will feature a 2.5-acre lake.
Brabazon Park will be part of a wider mixed-use development that also includes a new 17,000-seater music and events arena in the former Brabazon Hangars.
YTL said the park, which is scheduled for completion in 2024, would be the “beating social heart” of the project, for which there are plans for thousands of new homes.
The company added the park would host independent lakeside cafés and restaurants, while a range of two-to-four-bedroom houses and one-to-two bedroom studio apartments next to the site were also available to reserve.
Seb Loyn, planning and development director at YTL Developments, said: “Brabazon Park is designed for everyone. The range of activities and attractions will bind together the new community at Brabazon and benefit visitors from across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
“Whether it is an early morning jog along the boardwalk, an afternoon outing to the adventure playground with the family or a date-night drink by the lake, Brabazon Park will offer something for everyone.”
In a nod the history of the site, the design of the park draws inspiration from aviation engineering, and will feature a ‘heritage trail’, connecting the Brabazon Hangars with Aerospace Bristol Museum, to tell the story of the airfield's pioneering past.
In April, Malaysia-based YTL forecasted the entire Brabazon project could provide a £5bn boost to the local economy and support more than 30,000 jobs.
