Huge Paisley bonfire built by locals as flames seen miles away

Fire crews were called to a huge bonfire built by locals in Paisley that could be seen from miles away on Bonfire Night. The massive inferno was set alight in the Shortroods area of the town and is believed to have burned until around 10pm on Saturday night.

Images shared on social media show the huge bright orange flames engulfing a grassy area near Shortroods Road. Thick black smoke billows over homes nearby, as locals gathered at the unofficial event.

A tape appears to have been erected to separate the fire from families who rocked up to catch a glimpse of the spectacle. It is understood fireworks were also set off at the gathering.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that one appliance was dispatched to attend the bonfire on Shortroods Road shortly before 9pm.

Firefighters found it to be controlled, and said all was in order and that no injuries had been sustained, so no action was taken to extinguish it.

Video footage emerged of locals preparing and gathering materials for the enormous blaze earlier in the day before it was set alight.

In the footage, members of the community can be seen dragging wooden pellets and piling bits of furniture including desks, chairs and tables on top of each other hours before the fire.

Another bonfire in Paisley, around a ten minute drive away in the Glenburn area, also cut a dramatic shape in the night sky as tens of residents stood in awe behind a metal fence to watch it unfold.

Debbie Hume, 41, who attended the display, told the Record: "The community had the fire under control at all times. The guys know what they're doing. The whole of Glenburn was there. It was a great atmosphere.

"All the kids' faces when the fireworks went off was priceless."
