Huge new Bristol veterinary hospital with 100 staff set to open in Avonmouth

Bosses at what could be the biggest animal hospital in the South West have begun recruiting vets and other staff ready for the facility to open this spring. The Veterinary Referral Hospital is currently being built in Avonmouth, and will employ more than 100 staff.

The firm behind the project say the facility will be innovative and will act as ‘a centre of excellence’ for small animal care in the entire South West region. The facility is being built at Central Park in Avonmouth by the CVS Group, which runs Bristol Vet Specialists.

CVS say it will operate as a ‘flagship regional hub’ for the group across the South West, the Midlands and Wales, with vets across those regions and nations referring animals to the Avonmouth hub for operations and hospital stays. With building work nearly finished, Bristol Vet Specialists has opened applications for more than 100 vacancies, ranging from specialist vets, surgeons and referral nurses, to front of house concierge and admin teams.

“The site will employ over 100 highly skilled professionals and will be led by a large team of nationally and internationally-renowned specialist veterinary surgeons, supported by residents, interns and registered veterinary nurses,” a BVS spokesperson said. “Together, they will create a centre for veterinary excellence and training in Bristol and the South West."

“Based at Central Park in Avonmouth, the site will offer the latest technology and treatments in all disciplines including; general surgery, orthopaedics, neurology and neurosurgery, internal medicine, ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, oncology and dentistry, as well as dedicated anaesthesia, analgesia, diagnostic imaging and intensive care departments,” she added.

“The centre is currently being custom-built with uniquely designed facilities. This includes the installation of cutting edge diagnostic tools, such as MRI and CT scanners, alongside a state-of-the-art linear accelerator which offers advanced, image-guided radiation treatments - for example intensity-modulated or stereotactic radiation therapy,” she said.

CVS Group has 473 vet practices across the country, and the new one in Avonmouth is set to be the most modern and largest they have. It is an upgraded specialist referral facility for CVS in Bristol, building on the current site on Wells Road which had reached capacity and had limited scope for expanding specialist services.

Delphine Holopherne-Doran, BVS’ clinical director, said: “We are excited to open up positions for veterinary professionals to come and work with us,” she said. “We hope to employ some of the most qualified and experienced veterinary professionals in Europe at our innovative new site.

“With a leading team, we hope that Bristol Vet Specialists will become a centre of excellence in the veterinary world - providing the best animal care to pet owners across the South West and becoming a leader in Europe for the treatment of cancer in small animals,” she added.
