Huge lizard 'that runs like a T-Rex' is on the loose in the UK after daring garden escape

Members of the public have been urged to keep an eye out for an escaped four-foot lizard which 'runs like a T-Rex'.

The reptile, named Echo, went missing on Saturday after digging out of her garden cage in the Workington area of Cumbria.

A Tegu lizard, Echo belongs to Pet Encounter Cumbria, and her handlers are now pleading for people in the region to help her return home safely.

Owner Siobhan Harkness said Echo is likely to simply run away if encountered, but may whip strangers with her tail if she feels scared.

Tegu lizards are a species of lizard native to Central and South America. They are often kept as pets, and are able to be housetrained.

In an appeal on social media, Siobhan said: "Could people from the Moorclose area, Workington especially Needham, drive onto the cycle track please keep an eye out for Echo our Tegu!

"She's escaped out of our garden and we have been looking for the last four hours and nothing. She loves to go underneath things and go to sleep, which is what I think she is doing now.

"She can't have gone far and is in the area, but with that many hiding places, it would be amazing if everyone could keep an eye out for her and hopefully, she will turn up soon."

Another update posted on Sunday evening said: "I've been out since 7am and doing one last look before calling it a night.

"I'm absolutely knackered, and having a chest infection is not helping the matter. Hopefully, tomorrow, we can track her down better with a drone and thermal camera, even if we can certainly say she's not in the area.

"Thank you to everyone who has been looking for her. We don't think she's gone far, and we probably walked past her loads of time."

Echo remained missing on Monday evening, and Siobhan said in a further update that she believed they were now in a "waiting game" until the escaped lizard "emerges from her hiding place".

Speaking to the BBC earlier, Siobhan said the Tegu would only whip with her tail as a "last resort" if scared, and said the species can also run fast on their back legs "like a T Rex."
