Huge 'gas explosion' flattens homes as major incident declared by police

A huge explosion has ripped through a terrace of homes, flattening one house and leaving others extensively damaged.

The Mirror reports emergency services rushed to the scene of the explosion on Clydach Road in Morriston, Swansea, shortly after 11am on Monday March 13. A major incident has been declared as emergency service workers pick through the rubble.

No details are yet available as to the number of casualties in the blast, which is thought to have been a gas explosion, although no confirmation of the cause has yet been established. Locals reported hearing a massive bang, and some even reported feeling their houses shake.

One local resident told Wales Online they "heard a bang, saw a gust of smoke and roof tiles from a house go up in the air". Alamgir Hossain, who lives opposite the scene of the apparent explosion, said: "Suddenly I heard a loud sound and we went out and then I saw a lot of damage to the house."

A video shared on social media shows scenes of destruction, with a number of firefighters at the scene. The author of the clip said a window in their home was destroyed following the incident.

They wrote: "Suddenly there was an explosion in a house near me. Approximately 20 houses were damaged.

"The window glass of my house was also broken by the loud noise. By the grace of Allah we are all fine."

Roads in the area have been closed off and people are being asked to stay away as emergency services work at the scene.

A statement from South Wales Police said: "Emergency services are responding to an incident on the junction of Field Close and Clydach Road in Morriston. Please avoid the area whilst we deal with the incident."

Local councillor Rob Stewart tweeted: "A major incident has been declared after a suspected gas explosion in Morriston. Emergency teams are responding.

"It is not known at this time if there are any injuries or fatalities. Further updates to follow."

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to reports of a gas explosion at 11.20am.

A spokesperson said: "As well as Fire and Rescue Service Crews, South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service are in attendance. South Wales Police have declared a major incident, no further information is available at this time."
