Arsenal hero Paul Merson has stated that he cannot believe Chelsea didn't go for Gabriel Jesus before arguing that the Brazilian international could outscore Manchester City's new star striker Erling Haaland.
Acquired for a fee believed to be in the region of £45million, Jesus arrives in north London with a plethora of experience under his belt and adds immense firepower to Mikel Arteta's frontline.
Jesus has already started life in an Arsenal shirt with a bang, scoring four goals and assisting one in four non-competitive appearances.
Merson was left impressed with the 25-year-old's performance against Thomas Tuchel's side last Sunday and believes that Chelsea have really missed a trick in not pushing for Jesus' signature.
"I was at Chelsea vs Arsenal the other day in Florida and Chelsea will have to pull up some trees to catch City and Liverpool," Merson said.
"It’s plain to see they can’t play a back four. I go a lot and whenever they play it you might as well go home. It’s that extreme. I also don’t like Chelsea’s business, it’s been slow and could come back to haunt them. It’s why Thomas Tuchel is getting so frustrated.
"You look at the other side and Arsenal had Gabriel Jesus and you’re scratching your head. How did Arsenal get him? The kid is an out-and-out centre-forward, he may even outscore Haaland. He was unbelievable the other day, why didn’t Chelsea have a look?
"When I was walking out of the ground, fans were saying ‘it hasn’t started properly yet, wait until the season starts’ but not what I watched, that was alarming."
Interestingly, it was revealed by Jesus' agent Marcelo Pettinati that Chelsea did make a move for the player but the former Manchester City forward's heart was set on a move to the Emirates Stadium.
