French Navy warship arrives in Liverpool

A French Navy ship has docked in Liverpool.

The Aquitaine D650 berthed today, Thursday, March 23, at the city's Cruise Liner Terminal. The warship, known as a frigate, is in service with the French Navy and is the lead ship of her class.

Construction of the ship began in 2007 and was completed in 2012. Aquataine was developed as part of a joint Franco-Italian program known as FREMM, which was implemented to develop a new class of warships for use by various European navies.

In April 2018, the ship participated in the bombing of Damascus and Homs. This was where the United States, France, and the United Kingdom carried out a series of military strikes involving aircraft and ship-based missiles against multiple government sites in Syria during the Syrian Civil War.

They said it was in reprisal for the Douma chemical attack against civilians on April 7 that year, which they attributed to the Syrian government. The Syrian government denied involvement in the Douma attacks and called the airstrikes a violation of international law.

Images taken by an ECHO photographer shows the warship moored at the terminal. It also had a French flag at the bow of the ship.
