Huge fire breaks out in Edinburgh city centre as emergency crews race to blaze

A huge gorse fire has broken out in Edinburgh city centre today sparking an emergency response.

Mercy crews raced to a raging inferno on the capital's Calton Hill after the alarm was raised around 3pm.

Photos and videos taken at the scene shows thick black smoke billowing from the site, reports Edinburgh Live.

The large fire is currently burning at the A1 roundabout entrance to the hill.

Concerned residents have shared shocking images and footage on social media as efforts to tackle the blaze continue.

In the videos, the city centre hill can be seen being engulfed in furious orange flames, just metres from the old Royal High School building on Regents Road.

There are currently no reports of people in danger due to the fire but hero fire fighters remain at the site battling the blaze.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they were attending an ongoing incident on Calton Hill, battling a large gorse fire.

Four appliances are on scene and have been since 3:15pm.
