Huge Edinburgh fire breaks out with plumes of smoke seen for miles

A blaze at one of Edinburgh's industrial estates was seen for miles on Sunday evening.

At around 10.30pm, plumes of smoke were seen rising into the sky by residents. The incident, which took place at the Jane Street industrial complex, was described as 'pretty serious' by locals.

Emergency services attended and the blaze has since been controlled. Fire crews extinguished a van as well as a number of pallets that were on fire.

Sylwia Kolasisnka, who saw the flames from her home several streets over, told Edinburgh Live: "I saw plenty of black smoke on an otherwise clear sky.

"It looked pretty serious. At some point I could also see the flames. It was put down considerably quick, at least this is how it looked from where I was watching the fire."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 10.34pm on Sunday, 11 June to reports of a fire at an industrial unit on Jane Street, Leith, Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and a high reach appliance to the scene, where firefighters extinguished a van and a number of pallets on fire. "Crews left at 11.27pm after ensuring the area was safe."
