Huge disruption to town as Lanarkshire fire crews battle through the night to tackle blaze

Emergency services are still at the scene of a huge blaze in Rutherglen this morning.

Firefighters raced to a premises on King Street after receiving several calls of a fire around 11.15pm last night.

It is understood no one has been injured in the blaze at what is believed to be the former social work offices at the back of Main Street.

Police closed off King Street at its junctions with Farmeloan Road and Alleysbank Road as firefighters with three appliances battled the inferno throughout the night.

Locals took to social media to express their horror, as well as to offer support and prayers for those caught up in the drama.

One woman wrote on Facebook: "I seen a large part of the roof collapse whilst on FaceTime with my mum - so scary to see," whilst another wrote, " Lots of fire personnel working hard to get it under control. Big section of the roof just collapsed."

A spokesman for Police Scotland told Lanarkshire Live : "Emergency services are currently in attendance at a fire on King Street, Rutherglen.

"King Street is currently closed in both directions and Farmeloan Road is also closed to the junction with Alleysbank Road."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they still had firefighters at the scene.

We will have more on this throughout the day.
