Huge cruise ship with four swimming pools returns to Liverpool

A huge cruise ship has docked overnight in Liverpool.

The P&O vessel Britannia is currently at Liverpool docks as part of a 14 day cruise around the British Isles which started last Friday. Arriving for the first time ever in the Mersey in 2015, the Britannia can carry up to 3,647 guests and 1,350 crew.

Believed to be leaving early tomorrow morning, the 141,000 gross ton vessel will then visit parts of Scotland including Glasgow, the Orkney Islands, Invergordon and Edinburgh before finishing off in Southampton.

On-board passengers can enjoy four different swimming pools and four different whirlpool spas, a theatre, library, and art gallery. There is also a steam room, sports court, cookery club and fully equipped gym.

She also has two dress codes. In the day, 'you can dress in whatever you like', however the Britannia has two dress codes that apply in the evening: either Evening Casual or Black Tie. However, not all venues on board adhere to the codes.

She was once the P&O's fleet's largest cruise ship until 2021, when the Iona was built. The Britannia was built in Italy and made her Mersey debut in 2015 during a special cruise around Britain.

At the time, passenger Jane Bell, then 68, said: "Liverpool has been fabulous. People were so friendly and the shopping area has everything you need. Coming in this morning and having the beautiful old buildings meet us was beautiful - I actually felt quite emotional. It’s my first time here but we will definitely be back."

Queen Elizabeth II named her at a ceremony back in 2015. At the time, Captain Paul Brown, who gave the Queen a tour of the ship, told the BBC: "It is my great honour after 33 years at sea to show the Queen around.

"I will be showing her the atrium and the bridge then heading down to the restaurant for lunch."
