Huge change to Twitter from April 15 announced by Elon Musk

Twitter owner Elon Musk has announced a huge shake-up of the social media platform and from April 15 only verified subscribers will have posts recommended to other users and be allowed to vote in polls.

Posts from non-paying accounts will not be included in the stream of recommended tweets, reports the BBC.

It comes after Twitter last week said the old blue tick status of 'legacy accounts would be removed. Blue Tick is now a paid-for feature.

Users now pay £5.70 a month for blue-tick verification.

Elon Musk says the changes are designed to stop AI and bots taking over Twitter.

Posting on Twitter he said: "Starting April 15th, only verified accounts will be eligible to be in For You recommendations. The is the only realistic way to address advanced AI bot swarms taking over. It is otherwise a hopeless losing battle. Voting in polls will require verification for same reason."

A former worker on Twitter's verification team told the BBC: "Verified users will use their power and their presence on the platform to influence anything from misinformation to actual harm for users all around the world. It's a silent threat that no one is seeing."
